Urban Dwellers Grow Veggies in a Park
There is different kind of park in Barangay Apokon, Tagum City, Iloilo. Unlike conventional parks, the 25-hectare Tagum Energy Park that the city government developed has a demonstration farm where urban dwellers grow vegetables and has office space for government agencies.
When asked why the park was named “Energy Park,” Tagum City Mayor Rey Uy said that it’s simply because the trees, plants and fresh air in the park could energize people. “We hope that by 2010, all our plans [for the park] will be in place,” he added.
So far, the Bureau of Food and Drugs Satellite Office for Mindanao and the Department of Education, Davao del Norte Division Office were established in the park. The Social Security System, Pag-ibig, and National Statistics Office also plan to build an office in the park, which has sites where boys and girls scouts could camp.
