Coffee Project Helps BSU Students

Students who are interested to pursue graduate and undergraduate studies in a discipline related to Arabica coffee production and processing at the Benguet State University (BSU) can benefit from the agreements signed by the Benguet State University with the Canadian company Rocky Mountain Arabica Coffee Company, Inc. (RMACC).

That’s because the BSU has agreed to allow RMACC to install Rocky Mountain Café (RMC) franchise(s) at the BSU campus, and the first one of which is now operational at the BSU Marketing Center.

The agreement, which was signed last January by Dr. Rogelio Colting, BSU president, and Rodrigo A. Vagilidad Sr., RMACC president, aims to generate profits that will be used to finance scholarships for students who are interested to pursue studies related to Arabica coffee production or processing at BSU. Another goal is to create job opportunities for BSU students.

Agriculture Students Grow Vegetables for Money

One practical way of enabling poor agriculture students to continue their studies is being implemented at the Visayas State University in Baybay, Leyte. This is what they call “Vegetable Scholarship.”

Under this scheme, agriculture students who would like to earn some money while studying plant vegetables which they can sell to earn cash. The project was launched by the East-West Seed Company and VSU last year and the results are encouraging.

Four senior agriculture students are currently enrolled in the program. There were originally seven when the project was launched but three have already graduated. The students plant the latest varieties of high-value vegetables on 3,000 square meters provided by VSU for free. The seeds are also provided free by East-West Seed Company.

USM Undergrad Research Results

The results of two undergraduate theses at the University of Southern Mindanao (USM) have caught our interest: an assessment of pineapple diseases in Tupi and Polomolok, South Cotabato by Irish B. Ofamia and an evaluation of plant extract formulations against Cercospora musae Zimm, which causes Sigatoka disease in banana by Lenneth P. Davao. Both of them are students of Dr. Naomi G. Tangonan, the lone university professor in USM.

In the study on pineapple, the top three field diseases of this crop are phytopthora heart rot, bacterial heart rot, and fusarium wilt. On the other hand, the postharvest diseases are black rot and fruit core rot.

Results showed almost one-fourth (23.5%) of the pineapple farms surveyed were infected with phytopthora heart rot, while over one-eighth (13.61%) had bacterial heart rot. Fusarium wilt infected only 2.28% of the farms. In the two marketing outlets, more than one-fourth (27%) of the fruits for sale were infected with black rot, while only 5% had fruit core rot.
