Mechanized Postharvest System Preserves Seed Quality

The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) found in a study that using a mechanized harvesting, handling, and drying system in breeder seed production lessens labor and risk of seed contamination.

Led by Engr. Ricardo Orge, the researchers harvested, threshed and bagged breeder seeds in special jute sacks using mini-combine, a machine designed by PhilRice with harvesting, reaping and threshing functions. Then they transported the filled sacks to the drying area with a trailer and dried the seeds while inside the sacks.

“[In this mechanized postharvest system,] it would only take 9-10 hours from harvesting up to the time the seeds are dried to final moisture content of 12 percent. [But in the conventional method], it would take 27 hours per hectare,” says Engr. John Eric Abon who is one of the proponents of the study.

Learn Technologies on Rice from a Successful Seed Grower in Isabela

Henry Ballesteros was reviewing for the board exam when he was asked by his friend to attend some seminars on rice production. But his interest in it got deeper that he decided to go back to Isabela to become a seed grower. Well, it seems that he has made a very good decsion because today he is one of the successful seed growers in Isabela.

A graduate of Technological University of the Philippines, Henry hosts experiments by the Department of Agriculture (DA) and private companies in his farm in San Andres, Aurora, Isabela. One of these was the Farmer-led Extension Program of DA in 2008 in which he was a Palay Check cooperator of.

He also holds farmers’ field day so other farmers can take a look at his farm, and attends seminars on rice production. So from these he sees which technologies really work. In fact he has practically Tried most of the technologies demonstrated in his farm.

A New Laurel for MMSU’s Extension Program

The extension directorate of the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) has very good reasons to be happy these days. It was the first to receive the Commission on Higher Education Outstanding Extension Program Award last December 2008, which may very well be considered the most prestigious laurel on its cap.

Dr. Miriam E. Pascua, MMSU president, said the award is a great honor as it is now recognized at the national level that its seed stock dispersal program is the best extension program in the country. The award carried with it a cash prize of P1 million and a trophy.

Dr. Pascua said the seed stock dispersal program is one of the flagship and banner programs of the MMSU Extension Directorate. “It presents a distinct model of sustainable-based development through an established assistance mechanism involving the coordinated efforts and complementation of resources by the academe, research and development agencies, local government units, farmer cooperators, and, marketing outfits.”

Tuba Seed Powder Controls Rice Weevil, Lesser Grain Borer

PhilRice researchers in Mindanao led by Evelyn S. Perialde have discovered that powdered seeds of tuba (Croton tiglim) can effectively control rice weevil (Sitophilus orvzae) and the lesser grain borer (Rhizopertha dominica).

Together with Jennifer J. Tagubase and Dr. Gerardo F. Estoy, Jr., the research team observed that tuba seed powder was more effective than the commercial insecticides Deltamcthrin and Pirimphosmethyl. Tuba seed powder effectively controls rice weevil and grain borer from one to five months in storage. Thus, this botanical pesticide could be developed and used as an alternative control against insect pests in seed storage.

Before treatment, the rice seeds were soaked in hot water (60°C) for 30 minutes to kill the eggs, larvae and adults of storage insect pests that may be present in the seeds. The seeds were sundried and then treated with tuba seed powder.
