A Different Kind of Derby

Most of the time when the word “derby” is mentioned, it usually pertains to cockfighting. There’s however another kind of derby that was held recently in the 13-hectare farm of boxing champion Manny Pacquiao in Brgy. Banahaw, Malungon, Sarangani province.

This was the Vegetable Derby which was the highlight of the recent Vegetable Congress that was participated in by the major vegetable seed producers and distributors in the country. In the derby, the leading seed companies in the country were allocated spaces where they planted their favorite hybrids for the visitors to see and to judge for themselves which varieties excel under the growing conditions in the Pacman Farm.

Among the companies that showcased their latest varieties were Allied Botanical Corporation owned by Willy Co, Kaneko, Syngenta which is a multinational company, Harbest Agribusiness Corporation headed by Toto Barcelona, and East-West Seed Company with Dr. Mary Ann Sayoc as general manager.

Since it’s her favorite beverage and it so happened that Maitum is the biggest rice-producing municipality of Sarangani, her daughters Elizabeth R. Palma and Nieda N. Ramos who are both government workers thought of venturing in processing rice- and corn-based products. They saw a business opportunity in these ancient Filipino beverages, for these are 100 percent caffeine- and preservative-free. After all, they thought, “not all coffee comes from a bean.”

Sarangani Bangus for Export

Imagine 10 to 15 tons of fish mostly bangus, harvested everyday. That’s how much fish the Alcantara Group is harvesting daily from their fishponds and fishcages in Sarangani, Souther Mindanao.

Some 60 percent of that volume is processed into various products with added value and sold abroad as well as in the country. Some 70 percent of the processed products are exported to the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia and Guam. The Alcantara Group is easily the biggest exporter of bangus products in the Philippines carrying the Sarangani brand. And it is not surprising why it was given the Golden Shell Award and Presidential Citation as the country’s top exporter of bangus products in 2004. The company was recognized for excellence in product design, manufacturing and marketing.
