Duck Meat and Egg Production (Part 4)

Have you been wanting to start your own duck business? Here’s a no-nonsense guide to jumpstart your way to success.

Vaccination and medication programs must be administered to the animals to prevent viral infections and bacterial diseases. Ducklings at age one day to seven days must be administered with antibiotic or sulfa drug preparation through drinking water to prevent bacterial infections like salmonellosis, collibacilosis and staphyloccosis. At age eight to 14 days, ducklings may be given antibiotic-vitamin-mineral mixture through their drinking water to increase the animal’s resistance against bacterial diseases. Ducklings aged 21-28 days may be given multivitamins to increase their resistance.

During stressful conditions like a change in climate, ducks at age two to four months may be given antibiotic vitamin-mineral mixture to be administered through their drinking water. Fowl cholera vaccine may be given to the ducks at age four and a half months by way of intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. An antibiotic vitamin mineral mixture must be given to the animals three days before administration of vaccine and again three days after to combat stress. During the laying months, antibiotic vitamin-mineral mixture may be given when needed. Sulfa drugs should not be administered during the laying period unless absolutely necessary.

Duck Meat and Egg Production (Part 3)

Waterers used for other poultry like chicken may be used for ducks. However, the size of the duck’s bill should be considered. Waterers such as troughs, cans, or jar-type equipment may be used provided the drinking area is at least 4.0 cm wide. This also applies to automatic trough, cup or Plasson waterers. When using nipple waterers, they should be adjusted to the height of the ducks.

For ducks raised indoors where the floor is bedded with litter, waterers should be located on a wire-mesh screen to reduce wetting of the litter. Commercial duck houses are recommended to have a cement floor drain underneath the water screens.

Starting and growing ducks must be provided with minimum of 2.5 cm or 1 inch of linear watering space per animal. Developing and laying breeders should be provided with 5.0 CRl or 2 inches watering space. When using nipple waterers, 15 nipples should be provided for every 100 starting and growing dticks. Developing and laying breeders should be provided with 20 nipples for every too ducks. Starting ducklings should always have access to watering cans, troughs or jars until the v are able to drink from nipple waterers.

Duck production is one of the most profitable livestock industries in the Philippines mainly because of its egg which can be marketed through different channels. Duck eggs, both in fresh and preserved forms, are sold and consumed daily throughout the country. Duck meat is also gaining ground in the market today.

Duck production in Asia accounts for more than 80% of total world production, as ducks have been traditionally raised alongside fish farming and rice production. 90% of total duck egg production in the country is used for balut-making. Offsized and infertile eggs are used for processing of century eggs and salted eggs. Dead embryos are sold as penoy. Meat-type ducks are also raised for restaurants, while home consumption duck meat is derived from excess males and culled layers from egg-type ducks.

Forced Molting As Egg Production Strategy

One practical technique of becoming more competitive in egg production is forced molting. This technique forces the chickens to change their feathers. In the process, the birds stop laying eggs for about a month in preparation for a heavier egg production.

This is what the biggest poultry farm in Mindanao, Davao Farm, has been doing late last February. Davao Farm usually produces 300,000 to 400,000 eggs a day but in last February, many of the birds were on forced molting to lower egg production to just over 200,000 a day.

Why? The owners had to lower their production in March to April because the demand for eggs dips during these months. That’s because the students are on vacation. It is well known that students comprise the bulk of egg consumers. By forced-molting the chickens, heavy egg production will start one month later. Eighty percent of the chickens or even more could be laying eggs every day. And that will continue for many months.

The Improved Salted Duck Eggs From Ilocos

Wrapped in corn covers with festive designs, the improved salted eggs from Ilocos would he easily mistaken for Easter eggs. Nope, these are the all-time favorite itlog na maalat yet these are more delicious and have a longer shelf life.

It’s safer to eat these than the red salted eggs in the market. It has been reported that cancer-causing Sudan Red dye has been found in salted eggs from China, and this explains why some consumers are now wary of red salted eggs.

It’s nutritious, too. Compared to fresh egg, balut, penoy, and century egg, salted egg is highest in calcium (120 mg), carbohydrates (4.4 mg), ash (202 mg), and thiamin (0.47 mg).

Chickens and Eggs: What Lies Ahead?

Is 2009 going to be a kind year for the poultry industry? Experts forecast a growth in production but say integrators will still be conservative on production expansion.

Towards the end of 2008, when leaders of the poultry industry met to assess and plan their strategies for 2009, a rather radical statement rang in the four corners of the air-conditioned hall “achieve world-class efficiencies or get out!” That seems to be the new battle cry of the poultry biggies nowadays especially when issues regarding competitiveness, disease control and export capabilities are thrown in the air with high decibel sounding emphasis. They say our advantage is that we are still an avian influenza (AI)-free country although that should not make us complacent. Truth to tell, achieving that global competitive status is still a far goal to achieve.

According to the University of Asia and Pacific’s Center for Food and Agri Business, the poultry industry recorded a growth of 4.4% during the first quarter of 2008. The industry is projected to grow by 4% in the first half and a growth of 5% in the second half of 2009. Given the level of grandparent imports, this growth could be higher. Chicken output usually falls during the second quarter (which coincides with the hot months) and increases during the third and fourth quarter (the relatively colder months). At the same time, the surges during the fourth quarter are due to the stronger demand during the holidays. Despite expected growth in production, integrators will still be conservative on production expansion. High production costs have been the limiting factor for them to produce more and export more chicken despite the Philippines’ distinction as a bird-flu country. Local demand is expected to increase as some pork consumers might tend to shift to chicken consumption due to high prices. Growth is projected at 5.5 6.5% in 2009.

Salted Eggs : The Independent Hatch

Pangasinan, known for its yearly delight of varieties of bangus, holds another niche for small time backyard farmers.

The secrets to our salted eggs are strictly confidential,” says AKCE Marketing owner Alex Estialbo, one of the only few independent salted egg raisers and sellers in Pangasinan, “I guess normal naman `yun at understandable for other businessmen not to give out the ingredients to their business, di ba?”

Alex, at 40, looks too quiet, if not secretive, for a businessman. He says he stumbled upon the potential of the salted egg business in a casual fashion. He was working for his brother who owned a fullsize bakery, also in Pangasinan, for over a year; and after some time, felt the urge to venture to another line of commerce. After leaving the life of making sweets, pastries and cakes, and swinging from one gig to another to make a decent buck, he stopped and deemed the promise of turning soil to investment.
