Brasil reports the cost of producing ethanol from sugar cane at $0.20 to $0.22/liter or $0.76 to $0.83/gallon and this includes plant depreciation costs. These ethanol plants in Brasil operate 4 to 5 months of the year and are idle the rest of the year. in the case of swet sorghum, if you are in the right climate, the ethanol plant will operate 12 month of the year as you can get over 3 crops a year. Production costs fro ethanol from sweet sorghum should be less than from sugar cane.

I like the fact that Sweet sorghum requires very little moisture. It seems like precipitation volume has significantly decreased in our area and this crop could very well be a viable alternative.

To the author of this article, thank you for these informations. It is quite informative. However, it seems likewise that i need more information about the feasiblility and procedure of making jaggery, syrup and wine perhaps out of stem juice of sweet sorghum including. Also, the usefulness of its bagasse as alterative feedstuff to dairy murrah, preferably in the Phiippine condition. I am an Agriculturist, anyway, making a research about sweet sorghum utilization. Thank you and I look forward to have a link with you! More power!

So they can use Sorghum for fuel now as well? That's amazing! If they could feed more people this gluten free grain alternative in mass quantity while also deriving ethanol, that would be perfect!

How can the cost to produce ethanol using sweet sorghum be $1.74/gallon when the trading price is $1.80/gallon? In the USA the cost to produce ethnaol from corn is quoted as $1.10 to $1.20/gallon. How can it be $2.12 as you publish?

So I am pleased to find this article and I would like to link with people who are doing research on the crop to know more on current status. Currently I am MSc student

If Sweet sorghum is so HOT, why has it not caught on.

Why are US farmers suffering & continuing using CORN for ethanol.

What is the latest progress report from Tata-Chemicals Sorghum-Ethanol plant ? How much ethanol are they producing per day ?

(please email me response to my queries..thanks)
