Research Unravels “Ube’s” Medicinal Properties

Baybay City, Leyte – Research continues to unravel more medicinal properties to yam (ube), one of the country’s most important root crops.

Earlier studies have shown that yam tubers were used traditionally in herbal medicines because of their reported effects on the organ systems.

They reportedly lowered sugar levels, improved metabolism (chemical changes in the blood), prevented damage in blood vessel walls, and provided energy antioxidant defenses.

Antioxidants are phytochemicals or substances (mostly present in vegetables and fruits) that neutralize or counterbalance the free radicals generated by the body during metabolism.

Free radicals are the most toxic and vicious by-products of metabolism. When not neutralized, they can travel through the body cells, disrupting the structure of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids, and cause cell damage that contributes to aging and degenerative diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, stroke, cataract, cancer, and the like.

Now comes another intensive study done by the Visavas State Universitv (VSU) in this seaside city situated 120 kilometers south of Tacloban City.

The research, titled “Isolation and Functional Characterization of Mimetic Protein (PRP-1) from Yam” and done by Dr. Edgardo Tulin of VSU-Phil-Rootcrops, further unraveled yam’s other medicinal properties.

The scientific study won the first prize in the “Best Paper Award” (Research category) at the 2008 National Symposium on Agriculture and Resources Research and Development (NSARRD) held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Makati City.

PCARRD said Tulin’s exceptional resources has added premium and economic value to root crops; identification of a candidate anti-cancer protein from “nagsumpay”, and indigenous plant species; classification of PRP-2 in taro (gabi) important for immune regulation; identification of high quality starch from yam and taro suitable for infant formulations.”

The yam substances that has potential as cure for hypertension has been named by VSU as Phil-Rootcrops Protein-1 or PRP-1.
