Philsurin Releases Three New Sugarcane Varieties

The Philippine Sugar Research Institute breeding station located at Victorias City Negros Occidental, announced the release of three outstanding sugarcane varieties from the year 2000 series.

Out of the 114,000 seedlings produced from 790 crosses of 250 parent varieties, three varieties proved outstanding: PSR 00-34, PSR 00-343, and PSR 00-161. These three varieties have undergone eight years of intensive evaluation and selection process in 15 locations throughout the country. Yield data were based on 27 plant and 11 ratoon trials in at least 13 sites.

PSR 00-34 is a cross between VMC 84-194 and Phil 89-43. Phil 89-43 is a commercial cane noted for disease resistance and also high tonnage due to its big stalks and good germination, while VMC 84-194 is a variety with good rendement and disease resistance.

It is tall, self-detrashing and has medium to fairly big stalks. It has brownish green to purplish brown stalks with medium sized buds that are round, and flat to semi-bulging. It has leaves that are : curved near tip.

PSR 00-34 is recommended for dry areas similar to San Carlos, Bukidnon, Capiz and Tarlac.

PSR 00-34
(VMC 84-194 x Phil 89-43)

• Fast growing
• Moderate tillering
• Tall, medium to fairly big stalks
• Fairly good stand
• Self detrashing
• High tonnage (118 TC/Ha)
• Average to moderately high LKG/TC (2.11 )
• Sparse to moderate flowering

Disease Reaction:

• Resistant to smut and rust, moderately resistant to yellow spot

PSR 00343

PSR 00-343 was produced from a poly-cross of VMC 84-947, a commercial cane noted for its high tillering capability and adaptability to a wide range of area including eroded and drought prone areas.

It is tall with fairly thin to medium, cylindrical, brownish purple stalks. It has distinctly aligned internodes and flat buds with occasional trichomes. It is self-detrashing, flowers moderately, may lodge and may develop moderate aerial roots.

PSR 00-343 has the advantage of very good germination and heavy tillering, resulting in high tonnage. It has outranked all other entries in the over-all TC/Ha in 11 out of 12 test sites and significantly higher sugar yield (LKg/Ha) in 8 locations.

PSR 00-343 is recommended in most sugar mill districts, particularly Victorias, HPCo, San Carlos, Bukidnon, Davao La Carlota, Bogo and Batangas.

PSR 00-343
(VMC 84-947 POLYCROSS)

Good germinator
• Heavy tillering & fast growing
• Tall
• Semi-self detrashing
• High tonnage (120 TC/Ha)
• Average to moderately high LKG/TC (2.22 )
• Fairly thin to medium
• Lodging
• Profuse flowering
• Moderate aerial roots

Disease Reaction:
• Highly resistant to smut and rust. Resistant to yellow spot

PSR 00-161

PSR 00-161 is a cross between VMC 86-550 a variety with a stable high rendement but with disease susceptibility problem and VMC 87-599, a variety with disease resistance and a high tonnage potential.

It has fairly thin to medium, cylindrical and solid stalks that tend to recline or lodge at harvest time and to occasionally produce moderate to heavy aerial roots. Buds are small to medium, prominently round but flat. It has green leaf sheath with purple tinge. It has no trichomes in its leaf sheath.

PSR 00-161 exhibits good germination, heavy tillering, fast growth, self detrashing, and sparse flowering characteristics. It had higher sugar yield over any of the check varieties in 7 out of 12 locations.

PSR 00-161 is recommended for La Carlota, San Carlos, Bukidnon, Passi, Bogo, Davao and Batangas.

PSR 00-161
(VMC 86-550 x VMC 87-599)
• Good germinator
• Fast growing and heavy tillering
• Fairly tall to tall
• High tonnage (113 TC/Ha)
• Moderately high LKG/TC (2.24)
• Fairly thin to medium
• Lodging
• Heavy aerial roots
• Profuse flowering

Disease Reaction:
Very highly resistant to rust, moderately resistant to yellow spot.
