First Single-Stage Smart Hatcher Project in the Philippines Launched (Part 1)

This single-stage operated broiler hatchery in the country produces 200,000 day-old-chicks per week in the first phase.

Having monitored the development of single-stage incubation technologies for several years, Bounty Fresh Foods inc. (formerly Tyson Agro) has elected to install its new broiler hatchery project in Cagayan de Oro, Mindanao, with single-stage, closed-door Smart Incubators from Pas Reform, the Dutch incubation equipment supplier.

The new hatchery, which as the first singlestage operated broiler hatchery in the Philippines produces 200,000 day old chicks per week in its first phase. The company has installed SmartSetTM setters, SmartHatchTM hatchers and Pas Reform’s hatchery ventilation system.

“We have been looking at the introduction of single stage incubation in our broiler operation for some time now”, explains Tennyson Chen, President of Bounty Fresh. “When we made our last investment in Tarlac some seven years ago now, we were at that time still not convinced about the benefits of single-stage incubation - and consequently chose multi-stage equipment for that project.”

Now, with improvements and developments both in genetics and in single-stage methodology, The company says Tennyson is, excited about introducing single stage incubation practice in Mindanao for the first time.

Kenneth Chen, Tennyson’s brother and business partner, adds, “We have seen the impact that Pas Reform has had on single-stage with the introduction of its Smart incubation system over the last couple of years”.

Working in partnership with Pas Reform, says Chen, the time is now right to capitalize on the benefits of single stage incubation in terms of broiler uniformity and feed conversion ratios. “Working alongside Pas Reform’s hatchery management specialists, we are confident that we will achieve the technical results to deliver superior chick quality, and with that, superior broiler performance”.

Smart incubation system
Driven by customer’s needs around the world for greater efficiencies, reliability and performance in the hatchery, the Smart single stage incubation meets two key challenges for today’s producers and integrated companies: the ability to cope with the differing needs of genetic advancement by the breeding companies and the delivery of uniform, healthy day old chicks.

SmartSetTM single stage setter
SmartSetTM is Pas Reform’s next generation setter: restyled and redesigned to promote a reliable, uniform hatch of healthy, day old chicks.

The inside of the SmartSetTM setter recommends single-stage incubation as the way forward in the modern hatchery.

Homogenous temperature distribution is the single most important parameter for successfully incubating today’s modern breeds, each of which has a unique temperature `signature’ for embryonic development.

Even minor temperature fluctuations can have a major impact on uniformity and post hatch performance. With SmartSetTM, the average difference in eggshell temperature is less than 0.5 °F. Its modular design meets this specific requirement by enabling set points to be defined separately for each section of 19,200 hen eggs. This means that eggs from different maternal ages, breed types or storage times can be set at the same time.

Each incubation section has a capacity is equipped with separate heating, cooling and ventilation controls. During incubation some sections may be cooling, while others are heating - the only way to guarantee an even incubation temperature and to create a stabilised micro-environment around the eggs.

With capacities up to 115,200 hen eggs, SmartSetTM is the largest closed-door, single-stage incubator available on the market today. Once the trolleys are in, total system control is possible from outside the setter, eliminating any need to move trolleys during the setting period and fully preserving the integrity of heat management and distribution.

Features include:

Increase Heating Capacity : to improve day old chick uniformity, it is vital that the hatching eggs, once in the setter, are rapidly and evenly brought on temperature to start the incubation process. SmartSet’sTM new heating device has a substantially larger heating surface area and therefore reduces the time to reach machine set point by 5oper cent. This significantly improves uniformity and subsequent post hatch performance.

Increase Cooling Capacity : modern breeds generate more metabolic heat now than in the past - and detailed work to forecast future developments has enabled Pas Reform to calculate cooling capacities not only for today’s breeds, but also for their offspring in twenty years from now. This has driven the design of the heating & cooling system in SmartSetTM: the setter’s cooling capacity has been increased by 40 percent.

Integrated heating and cooling system : to achieve homogeneous temperature distribution throughout the machine, SmartSetTM has a combined heating & cooling device with 34 vertical, parallel coils per section, supplied with hot or cold water for optimumm energy transmission to and from the incubating eggs.

Smart HatchTM Hatcher
SmartHatchTM is Pas Reform’s hatcher, redesigned and redeveloped to improve results through the final days of the incubation cycle. SmartHatchTM is a fully automated hatching system that delivers accurately regulated temperature, humidity and ventilation: an exemplary hatchery for high day old chick uniformity with no need for human intervention.

To deliver a fully-automated hatching system that delivers accurately regulated temperature, humidity and ventilation - Pas Reform has developed SmartHatchTM, an exemplary hatcher that delivers high day old chick uniformity with no need for human intervention.
