Finfish Hatcheries, Inc. Donates 1 Million Bangus Fry to Pangasinan’s La Union Fishertolks

The recent fury of typhoon Cosine wrought havoc to the fishponds, pens, and cages in the provinces of Pangasinan and La Union. This led thousands of fisherfolks not only to lose their regular income but also deprived them of the assets to rebuild their devastated businesses. In line with this, the Department of Agriculture, through the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) liaisoned with Finfish Hatcheries, Inc., a pioneering company considered to be the biggest fish hatchery in Asia in dispersing io million Sarangani bangus fry to the fishpond operators of Pangasinan and La union in order to mitigate the effects of the typhoon.

“Of the 10 million Sarangani Bangus fry, one million of them were donated by Finfish Hatcheries,Inc. in support of the very noble purpose of BFAR,” said Rene Bocaya, the company’s national sales manager. The recipients were fisherfolks from La Union, Alaminos and Dagupan City, the towns of Infanta, Bolinao, Labrador, Sual, Bugallon, Calasiao, San Fabian, Mangaldanan and Binmaley.

Bocaya, who was present during the simple bangus fry dispersal ceremony at the city plaza of Dagupan City together with City Mayor Alipio, Fernandez and BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden said this is their company’s humble contribution to help fisherfolks in Pangasinan province “We have always been a partner of BFAR in their developmental activities,” he disclosed.

BFAR Regional Director Nestor Domenden announced during the dispersal that the only requirement they request from their beneficiaries is that they report to the local agriculture office the volume of bangus produced four to six months after the distribution. This is for BFAR to know how effective their relief program is.

For their part, Bocaya further explained that employees of their company, based in Lun Masla, Sarangani Province (Mindanao) really go out of their way not only to distribute fry to small fisherfolks, but also give technical services to their clients. “Our staff are fisheries graduates and we really send them out to attend technical trainings so that they can in turn help our small fishermen in their production problems,” he said. “With the dwindling marine fisheries catch, it is the aquaculture sector which will fill the gap in the supply of fishes in our tables. We believe that as a company, we are doing our own share for the survival and improvement of the Philppine aquaculture industry.”
