Central Philippine University Develops Cocopeat Pellet Gas Stove

Cocopeat a biomass that is quite difficult to burn, can now be used as fuel for cooking. This is possible with the Cocopeat Pellet Gas Stove, a low-cost technology which was developed by the Appropriate Technology, Center of the Central Philippine University in Iloilo City.

It only costs P500 to P1,500, depending on the materials and fabrication technique used. It is also portable and emits minimal smoke during operation. It can boil a liter of water in 11 to 15 minutes at a rate of 10 grams of pelleted fuel per minute.

This Top-Lit-Up-Draft-type stove, which was developed with the assistance of agricultural engineering students Job Cordero, Jojie Garcia, Lucio Larano, and Ruel Hamor, produces a yellow to pink flame due to the high amount of volatile matter in cocopeat. The intensity of its flame is also controllable, and it can be energized using AC (alternative current) and DC (direct current) power source.

The body of this stove has a diameter of 24 cm and a height of 30 cm and is made of GI sheet no.18. Its inner and outer shells, on the other hand, are made of stainless steel sheet where the cocopeat pellets are gasified during operation. Beneath the inner cylinder is a grate that holds fuel while being gasified. It has also a small computer 12-DC fan that supplies air for gasification.

For further details about the cocopeat pellet gas stove, address inquiries to the Project Director of the Appropriate Technology Center at CPU aprotech@yahoo[dot]com.

I saw your article in the internet and would like to know more about it. We are based in the Sub-Saharan Africa , one of our sister companies is engaged in the manufacture of Oil Absorbents from coco peat(Imported from India) As such we have vast quantities of coco peat at our disposal. Nowadays in Botswana and South Africa we are going thru a Energy crisis as such all are engaged in alternative sources.
I feel the cocopeat pellet gas stove might be a good solution. Do let us know of your interests.
    Regards
