Binalot’s Dahon Program : Uplifting the Lives of Banana Farmers

One of the most successful fast food chains went a notch higher in their mission to really help the marginalized farmers in the true sense of the word.

Filipinos are by nature fun-loving and generous. This is most exemplified by our Fiesta culture when the entire community works together to make this yearly event a success. This type of community spirit best exemplifies Binalot’s DAHON Program.

Binalot started as a small food delivery service in 1996 and since then, has grown to a full-fledged fast food restaurant. Culled from the Filipino term that means “wrapped,” Binalot serves classic Filipino fiesta foods like inihaw na liempo and dinuguan wrapped in banana leaves just the way they would do it in the provinces. It brings to mind the fiesta atmosphere of fun dining and the great taste of home-cooked or lutong bahay meals. Binalot’s President Rommel Juan said he got the idea for Binalot from the meals his grandmother used to prepare when he was a child.

Recommendation For Broilers

Temperature
The ventilation system must guarantee that the day-old chickens maintain a body temperature. The most favorable temperature is very critical and in case of deviations, the mortality rate will rise considerably. Later in the production cycle, the temperature must ensure the best productivity. Normally, we distinguish between the actual temperature to be read on the thermometer and the sensed temperature. Air humidity and air velocity have great impact on the sensed temperature.

Bitter Gourd : The Bouncy Bonito

Two years ago, a leading seed company developed a bitter gourd hybrid and christened it Bonito. Now it’s beginning to make waves.

While we have looked at the Ilocano segment as our primary targets, the sales we are making in other non-Ilocano areas show that this variety has a strong chance of penetrating wider segments of the market.

Slowly but surely, a hybrid of bitter gourd is pervading the Metro Manila market. But until now, its sound effects to consumers and producers seem to be unsung to many.

Yolly Raca Cashes in on Goat’s Milk Soap

A corporate career woman used her knowledge and network in the export business to start her own goat’s milk soap business.

Cleopatra was said to have bathed in goat’s milk as part of her beauty ritual for years. And so do a lot of Hollywood celebrities. Experts claim that handcrafted goat’s milk soaps are more moisturizing and nourishing than commercial soaps because goat’s milk contains many vitamins and minerals when infused into the human skin. Likewise, beauty experts say all the glycerin is still inside handmade soaps whereas it is extracted from commercial soaps for resale to other beauty industries. Glycerin, as the scientific journals explain, attracts water molecules, and when used on the skin, also attracts water instead of losing it, leaving the complexion softer.

Better Days For Agriculture

The DA has become more bullish about pushing the development of markets for agribusiness. This has led many to believe that the next three years will be better for Filipino farmers and fisherfolks.

Two months ago, DA Secretary Arthur Yap delivered an extemporaneous speech to the farmers and fisherfolks of Florida Blanca, Pampanga during the formal launching of pangasius, the fish from Vietnam which, experts say, could be the next alternative to tilapia and bangus. The speech highlighted the DA’s resolve to fu fill its promise of providing food for every Filipino table by 2010. The following translated excerpts of Secretary Yap’s speech would reveal why, despite the current political problems, observers believe, things will turn out better for Philippine agriculture in the next three years.
