Simultaneously, she is working for agricultural organizations and helping the sector boost its production; in March 2000 for instance, she and Ms. Gozon pioneered the exportation of mangoes in Korea by setting up export protocols with the Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Plant Industry.

Special Report : Strategies to Combat Poverty, Malnutrition Named

The recently concluded 21st National Rice R&D has revealed new strategies to combat poverty and malnutrition, the overarching problems of the Philippines.

The Social Weather Stations December 2007 report noted that there were close to three million Filipinos who suffered from involuntary hunger (no food to eat) during the survey period. Moreover, the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) cited that 3.9 million Filipino children below five years were under weight in 2005.

Rice Crisis : Scrounging Amidst Plenty

The current rice shortage seems to be of national magnitude, but solutions can be found by breaking down the problem into manageable parts…

In the news lately is the long queue of people buying NFA rice-taking more than an hour of waiting for a buyer to buy three kilos of low-priced-rice. The long lines are reminiscent of years of the past, when a similar situation came to fore.

The increase of the price of rice (and other food commodities) in the world market- over 1oo% over three years- is a nightmare for rice importing countries like us and Indonesia and Bangladesh where the food cost is about 8o% of income earned by their poorest Constituents.

Shooting the insurgents and killing them is not the solution, says Proceso J. Alcala. the congressman from the second district of the province. Alcala is a civil engineer who has been in the construction business before entering politics. When he was campaigning for his first term in Congress, he tried to analyze what could be done to prevent the people from turning insurgents.

Corn : Nationwide Corn Program Launched

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has issued Executive Order 710 mandating the nationwide adoption of a corn-based production program.

Simply called Farmer-Scientists Training Program (FSTP), it is an agricultural Research, Development and Extension (RDE) strategy involving primarily the changing of or improving knowledge, skills, and attitudes of farmers engaged in crop production such as corn, rice, vegetables, and animals in a corn-based production system to adopt scientific methods of farming.
